Professor Angus Deaton

2015 Nobel Laureate in Economics

Professor Deaton (PhD, Cambridge University; Emeritus Professor, Princeton University) revolutionized consumer behavior analysis through his "Almost Ideal Demand System" (AIDS). His seminal research on poverty, inequality, and welfare—including the monograph The Great Escape: Health, Wealth, and the Origins of Inequality—has profoundly influenced economic theory, empirical methodology, and public policy.

Mr. Atsushi Miura

Renowned Japanese Sociologist and Consumer Trends Expert

Mr. Miura is acclaimed for his analysis of Japan’s consumer culture, social stratification, and class dynamics. His pioneering theories—including“lower-class society" "fourth consumer era" and "low-desire society"—articulated in works such as Lower Class Society and The Fourth Consumer Era, have significantly shaped socioeconomic strategies across East Asia.Submission Topics

Conference Theme: Consumption Upgrading and Human Well-Being

Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), ICCS 2025 addresses consumption’s role as a catalyst for macroeconomic recovery and human welfare enhancement. In the transitional post-growth era, consumption upgrading is critical to global economic resilience and well-being. We welcome interdisciplinary perspectives on these challenges from Economics, Management, and related fields.

About the Organizer

The Business School of Xiangtan University(XTU)—birthplace of Consumer Economics in China—established the discipline through the inaugural journal Consumer Economy (1985) and the Centre of Consumer Economics (elevated to Institute status in 2011). The School offers:
